From seed to harvest, every step of our process reflects generations of farming expertise and a commitment to sustainability. By following the sun and growing in optimal regions, we ensure year-round freshness and quality. Through hands-on care and innovative practices, our farms deliver premium produce from the best fields to your table.

Optimal Growing Regions

We believe high-quality produce can only be achieved by growing in optimal locations that allow our seeds to thrive. That’s why our entire farming operation follows the sun from ranch to ranch. Each farm has been carefully selected for soil, climate and environmental factors that allow us to grow year-round.

From April to October, we grow our produce on ranches stretching from Hollister to Greenfield in California. Then from November to March, we farm land in Yuma, Arizona, the Imperial Valley and Oxnard, California (with celery ranches in Oxnard continuing to grow through June). In between our main growing seasons, we leverage farmland in Huron, California. And all the while we are growing premium fresh lettuces at our state-of-the-art greenhouses in Livingston, Tennessee. This rotation schedule ensures not only premium quality products, but surety of supply for our customers and consumers.

Seed Selection

Seed Selection

Every great crop begins with the right seed. At Tanimura & Antle, we carefully select premium seed varieties based on growing region, seasonality, soil conditions, and desired product traits to ensure consistent quality, flavor, and performance. This process goes beyond selection - it’s strategic planning for success in the field. Before planting, we prepare and level the ground and conduct soil testing to create optimal conditions for germination. By starting with strong, well-adapted seeds, we set the foundation for healthy crops, efficient resource use, and high-quality fresh produce.

Soil Preparation

Healthy soil is the foundation of everything we grow. Our teams prepare each field by leveling the land to promote efficient water use and reduce runoff, while conducting soil analysis to ensure proper nutrient balance and structure. We also implement sustainable farming practices such as planting cover crops during off-seasons and incorporating crop residue back into the soil to build organic matter. These efforts support long-term soil health, enhance biodiversity, and help us grow high-quality produce while minimizing environmental impact.

Planting

We utilize multiple planting methods to ensure optimal crop performance, including direct seeding, transplanting, and innovative PlantTape technology. Direct seeding allows crops to germinate naturally in the field, while transplanting gives young plants a strong start in a controlled greenhouse environment before being moved to the field. Our use of PlantTape enables precise spacing, improved plant uniformity, and more efficient use of land and resources. Together, these methods help us maximize yields, improve consistency, and deliver high-quality fresh produce.

Growing

At Tanimura & Antle, we believe “the grower’s shadow” is key to producing exceptional crops. Our experienced growers actively monitor each field, ensuring plants receive the right balance of water, nutrients, and care throughout the growing cycle. Using advanced agricultural technology and farm innovations - including integrated pest management (IPM), precision irrigation systems, and data-driven field monitoring - we proactively address challenges while prioritizing food safety and sustainability. Our in-house pest control advisors support responsible, science-based solutions that protect crop health and deliver safe, high-quality produce.

Harvesting

Harvest is where experience and innovation come together. We continually invest in modern harvesting equipment and technology to improve efficiency, product quality, and worker safety. Our skilled harvest teams bring decades of experience, carefully handling each crop to maintain freshness and integrity. Combined with our industry-leading employee practices and long-tenured workforce, we ensure every product is harvested at peak quality and prepared for the next step in its journey.

Cooling

Maintaining freshness starts immediately after harvest. Our produce is quickly transported to nearby cooling facilities, where it undergoes precise temperature management to remove field heat and preserve quality. This critical step helps extend shelf life, maintain product integrity, and ensure food safety. By prioritizing quick cut to cool times close to the field, we protect the freshness our customers expect.

Shipping

Once cooled and quality-checked, products are added to our inventory and shipped through our robust distribution network to retailers, foodservice partners, and customers across the country. Every step is designed to deliver consistently fresh, high-quality produce you can trust.
