Payroll Technician Lead

Location: Salinas, CA. (Must be amendable to travel to other geographical locations for short-term work assignments)

Pay Range: $26.00 – $28.00 per hours 

The Role: In this role, you will work within our HR department and be responsible to process weekly and biweekly payrolls as well as coordinating responsibilities and overseeing a team of employees. This will require working collaboratively across multiple departments in order to process accurate calculation of wages, tax withholdings, and employee elected deductions. Excellent people management skills and ability to work as part of a team are critical for this role.

Areas of Responsibility: 

  • Process bi-weekly non-exempt and exempt employee payrolls.

  • Ensure all weekly and bi-weekly payrolls are processed accurately including; wages, tax withholdings, employee elected withholding and employee mandated withholdings.

  • Processing of employee one-time override deductions, analyze and calculate compensation wages and accruals.

  • Time detail reports, ensuring breaks and meals are provided and recorded as mandated by law, downloading and processing time from time keeping system.

  • Manual calculation of total hours worked daily, entering time in system and ensuring breaks and meals are provided and recorded as mandated by law.

  • Reconciliation of payments processed, sorting and preparing checks for distribution to employees.

  • Answer employee questions related to W-2’s, pay, tax and deductions.

  • Provide verification of employment and wage reports as requested.
    Assist team members with resolving errors or responding to inquiries.

  • Assist payroll Manager with scheduling and payroll distribution amongst team.

  • Assist with audit request, gathering information requested such as payroll documentation, payroll reports and employee pay stubs.

  • Assist in the development and innovation of payroll processes, strategic planning with Payroll Manager to set strategic goals that are short-term, long-term, and forward focused.

  • Perform other payroll related duties, including system testing for updates, voiding and reissuing payments, stop payments, per diem payments, filing and issuing final wages to employees.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Ability to multitask and handle a high volume of transactions daily and during demanding seasons.

  • Biliterate in English and Spanish with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, Power Point, JDE, UKG and working with ADP.

  • Effective leadership encouraging innovation and creativity while promoting company image and uphold company values.

  • Flexible working hours and availability to travel to other locations as needed for short assignments.

  • Great attention to detail, analyze and interpret data for accuracy.

  • In depth knowledge of state and federal payroll and tax regulations.

  • Initiative in all areas of the role, identifying areas that can be improved or creating solutions to existing problems.

  • Maintain discretion and confidentiality in all aspects.

  • Must be able to work well both independently and with a team.

  • High School Diploma/GED required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred

  • Minimum of 5 years payroll related experience and 3 years in a Lead Role.
