FRESH VEGETABLES - Leeks

Description:
Leeks are related to garlic, onions, shallots and scallions. Leeks look like large scallions, having a very small bulb and a long white cylindrical stalk of superimposed layers that flows into green, tightly wrapped, flat leaves. Leeks are usually about 12 inches in length and one to two inches in diameter, and have a fragrant flavor similar but sweeter and more subtle than shallots.

Selection Tips:
Leeks should have a nice full fan, with broad, flat, dark green leaves that wrap tightly around each other. The stalk should be light green, transitioning to a smooth white base.

Storage Tips:
Refrigerate leeks in a plastic bag for up to 5 days. Before using, trim roots and leaf ends.

Preparation Tips:

  • Add sliced leeks to your favorite omelet or frittata recipe. Sauté leeks and fennel.
  • Garnish with fresh lemon juice and thyme.

Additional Description:
14-15 inches in length, 6-10 inches of stalk, 3-4 per bunch

Additional Storage Information:
Ideal Storage Temperature: 34° -36° F/90-95% relative humidity.

Safe Produce Handling Suggestions:

  1. Refrigerate produce as soon as possible after purchasing. Refrigerate cut or chopped produce within two hours of peeling or cutting. Once cut, leftover produce should be discarded if left at room temperature for more than two hours.
  2. Wash hands with hot soapy water before and after handling fresh produce, as well as after using the bathroom, changing diapers, or handling pets.
  3. Wash all vegetables with cool tap water immediately before eating. Don't use soap or detergents. Cut away any bruised or damaged areas before eating.
