Description:
Cilantro, also referred to as Chinese Parsley, is the usual name for the leaf of the plant that is otherwise identified as Coriander. Cilantro has a distinctive green, waxy flavor. Cilantro's taste is a fragrant mix of parsley and citrus.

Selection Tips:
Cilantro leaves and stems have a lively, pungent fragrance. The leaves should be bright green and even colored, with no signs of wilting.

Storage Tips:
Cilantro may be stored for up to one week in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Or, simply place the bunch, stems down, in a glass of water. Refrigerate, changing water every 2 or 3 days. Just before using the cilantro, wash and pat dry with paper towels. Store away from ethylene-producing fruits to avoid discoloration, spotting or decay. Wash right before eating.

Preparation Tips:

  • Use cilantro crushed as a flavorful addition to salsas and bean dips.
  • Mix crushed cilantro into sour cream and use it as a topping for chili, tacos, or enchiladas.
  • Sprinkle cilantro over stir-fried vegetables for color.
  • Add cilantro to sesame ginger dressing when making Chinese chicken salad.

Safe Produce Handling Suggestions:

  1. Refrigerate produce as soon as possible after purchasing. Refrigerate cut or chopped produce within two hours of peeling or cutting. Once cut, leftover produce should be discarded if left at room temperature for more than two hours.
  2. Wash hands with hot soapy water before and after handling fresh produce, as well as after using the bathroom, changing diapers, or handling pets.
  3. Wash all vegetables with cool tap water immediately before eating. Don't use soap or detergents. Cut away any bruised or damaged areas before eating.
